One of Lansdale's permanent sesquicentennial additions is a gazebo in the center of Lansdale Memorial Park — and you and your loved ones can be a lasting part of the Memorial Park centerpiece by inscribing one of the bricks that surround the gazebo. Construction is finished; brick sale has been extended!
A new memorial was installed earlier this year in the heart of Memorial Park — and dedicated in honor of a man who was the face and heart of Lansdale for more than a half-century.
The late Michael DiNunzio, "Mayor Mike" to thousands of residents, has a new community gazebo at Memorial Park, named in his memory at Community Day in the Park July 16 during the borough's 150th anniversary celebration.
The structure was constructed by the 150th Anniversary Committee in cooperation with the Borough of Lansdale and Discover Lansdale. It sits in the space where the fountain and pond were once located, between the memorial markers and Weaver Field.
Mike passed away in 2011 at age 93. Owner of a shoe repair and luggage business, he became active in civic affairs upon return home from WWII service in Europe. He was involved in countless community organizations, especially the Lansdale Rotary Club, the Visiting Nurse Association, and the Lansdale Historical Society.
Most notably, he was the town's greatest booster during his 26 years as mayor beginning in 1982. Any cause that he felt benefited the borough received an energy bounce when he got involved. His infectious smile, firm handshake and power of persuasion gained funds and supporters for projects all over town.
To help defray the cost of the Michael DiNunzio Sr. Memorial Gazebo, the 150th Anniversary Committee and Discover Lansdale are continuing to offer custom engraved bricks for sale, laid in the walkway around the structure. Due to demand, we are adding a second season of setting bricks around the Gazebo this fall. So order your bricks NOW!
